Ben Bogaardt - ST (Excellent 1971 Private Canadian Loner Lounge Psych LP)

 

A dreamy blue country pop harmony sound echos through this LP. Ben is a serious signer songwriter. So serious, and talented he has a vocal range people envy. He has the assuredness in his tone and output that is online of Scott Walker. I hear it all over this LP. The songs he writes, are the standouts to point out.
When these guys harmonize, it's simply amazing and the laid back production of the instrumentation is a gem. When the organ player throws in the fingers for a solo, it's straight out the Band-meets-Dylan Hudson/Kooper playing. They sing about Loss, Love, Girls, Environmental issues, traditional folk songs are incorporated.
A song they made for a movie is included and is a standout track "River you must flow". They produce a song called "U.F.O." and is stunning in it's imagination running and, yep is about life from beyond our planet. My favorite track, is the first song on side 1. "Adalee" goes on and on in a syrupy echoey harmonizing loop that transfixes on very Sad Love story. The guitar playing is excellent all through, playing many styles with acid overtones on some tracks, and dobro / slide then rockabilly .
This is a really good LP to find. It was issued on the West Coast Canada in 1970. This is really a private press collector dream album !

The Earth - Elemental (1st Alan Parsons' band - 1968 Recordings - 2015 First Limited Release on Record Collector Magazine)

 

The first recorded work of Alan Parsons ! This was recorded in 1968 but never released and has echoes of early Black Sabbath, Cream and Arthur Brown. This long lost beauty, produced in a fantastic silver sleeve features nine cuts of heady early Prog and Blues Rock laid down on 4 track analog in 1 day ! Two extra live tracks from 1967 added.

Barry Mitchell was the second bassist of Queen before John Deacon came in. He left Queen on January 10, 1971 for personal reasons.

Phil Cooper & Kirk Chilton - Hawk in the Morn (Rare 1981 US Folk LP on Depot Recordings)

 

Excellent UK Folk LP released in 1981 on the little Depot Recordings label (USA) by Phil Cooper (guitar, psaltery and vocals) and Kirk Chilton (violin, viola and vocals). Kirk Chilton played later with two Swedish bands : Ensemble Nimbus and In The Labyrinth.

Friends o' Mine (Hugh Trethowan & Mark Moesgaard Kjeldsen) - ST (Rare 1972 UK Folk LP on Westwood)

 

Friends O’Mine were a duo of Hugh Trethowan and Mark Kjeldsen (accompanied by Dave Lewry - six-string guitar - and Brian Murray - electric bass -  and this was sadly the only album the duo released.
This album has some fabulous tracks that feature some great guitar work with some innovative lyrics.
All in all a really great album that has almost been totally forgotten.
Extremely rare album that is highly recommended – a real collector’s item only 250 albums pressed !

Mark Cohen - Plutonium (Excellent 1979 US Folk LP on Folkways Records)

 

Folksinger-songwriter Mark Cohen offers an intriguing follow-up to his 1977 Folkways album, Fare Well Traveller, with an environmentally themed work.
His 10 original compositions range from the story of a 300-year-old sunken ship (“The Shift of the Sands”) to the environmental concerns of nuclear power plants (“Plutonium”), a subject even more relevant today.
In his letter to Folkways Record founder Moses (Moe) Asch, Cohen explains the inspirations for many of the songs on this album. “The Nature of Things,” he writes in the liner notes, “is about how I’d take a sunset over a radioactive glow, of how the opposite of love is not hate but nothingness.”
The liner notes from this 1979 recording also include the song lyrics and songwriting and publishing credit information.

The Bards were from Magherafelt and Bellaghy, South Derry, comprising of George Tohill (double bass and vocals), Tony Hegarts (guitar, fiddle, mandolin and vocals) and Martine McIlhohw (tenor, banjo and mandolin).

Brian Reeves - Never Looking Back (Excellent 1977 US Private Folk LP)

 

I love this album. Plenty of vintage electronics on a few numbers. Original folk, psych/prog rock.
Gentle folk with surprising energy and sonic textures sneaking in even on some of the more quiet tracks. Those who enjoy 1970's rural rock/folk and prog/psych rock will be glad to add this album to their private press collection. (reviewed by "retrognome" on discogs)
