CURTIS BROTHERS - "Memories" (1975 US privately pressed little gem)
Lovely and still mostly unknown private press LP by this California-based duo, with a vibe somewhere between the bittersweet folk-rock sound of late 1960's Donovan, Smokey & His Sister etc. and early 1970's DIY singer-songwriter.
Brother Randy Curtis, who sang lead and wrote all the songs, died of cancer before the album's release and this was privately funded by friends and family in his memory.
The songs have a yearning innocence and undeniable sadness about them, aided by Curtis' gentle, melancholy vocal delivery. There's also an endearing, claustrophobic bed-sitter quality common to a lot of private press albums of the period -- and weirdly enough, a few tracks call to mind the simple ballads and love songs on Roky Erickson's solo records.
Definitely grows on you with each listen, and still off the radar screen for 1970's private press albums.
