STEVE & ED - "Dream Song" (Rare 1975 US Psych Folk masterpiece)

A surprisingly good folk-pop lp on the vanity label Century that I picked up recently due to my "leave no stock cover behind" compulsion. The notes say it was recorded in a Los Angeles area church, and it has a sort of cavernous low-fi sound quality that I quite enjoy. Very soothing Simon & Garfunkel-esque harmonies on most tracks, with sparse, acoustic heavy arrangements. Recorded in 1975, but tracks like "I Love The Rain" could easily pass for late 60′s to my ears. The majestic, spoken title track is nice as well. (from waxidermy)

Very great 1975 private pressed LP from Steve Hicks and Ed Rosiek.
A top fave of mine !

JED (aka Jed O'Connor aka Jed Silverstar) - "Merlin's Song" (Very rare 1982 US Psyche Folk masterpiece)

"Mystical, medieval folk songs played and sung very convincingly. And unlike some in the genre, I'm under the suspicion that the psych aspect is unintentional, but rather a natural setting for the songs that were written. This was recorded as some kind of educational project for a Florida based program specializing in all things from the Arthurian period. As far as the music, it's beautiful minor key folk with intricately woven male and female vocals. Fans of bands like Stone Angel, etc. would do well to track this down. Makes you want to dance with the jester".

Another of my top ten "desert island" LPs.

TURLEY RICHARDS - "From Darkness to Light - Solo Concert" (Very rare 1972 US Psych Folk LP)

Turley Richards (born Richard Turley June 12, 1941 in Charleston, West Virginia) is an American singer and guitarist.
Richards was blinded in the left eye at the age of four in an archery accident, and lost sight in the right eye as well some years later. He first began playing in a group called The Five Pearls while still a teen in the 1950s. His first appearance on record was a single titled "All About Ann", released on Cincinnati, Ohio label Fraternity Records.
He moved to Los Angeles with an ensemble in the early 1960s, but his band failed and he returned to West Virginia. Later in the 1960s he moved to New York. He played the uptown East Side local Bar's (Malachy's II) (72nd & Lexington) and eventually found success in New York. He released his debut album on Warner Bros. Records in 1970. He scored two minor hit singles in the US in the early 1970s.

Turley Richards' "From Darkness To Light - Solo Concert" is the most complex and illustrative album of his incredible talents.

HAMILTON CAMP - "Welcome to Hamilton Camp" (1969 US Great Folk LP)

On 1969's "Welcome to Hamilton Camp" LP, Hamilton Camp returned largely to his pre-folk-rock roots as a straight folksinger.
Camp played all the guitars and harmonicas and sang all the lead and background voices on this wholly acoustic record; in fact, he did everything, save for a little piano by producer Bobby Paris.
It's a curious mix of Camp originals and covers of songs both famous (by Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Peter LaFarge, and Leonard Cohen) and obscure (by Patrick Sky, Bob Neuwirth, and Peter Boyd).
Camp's brand of acoustic folk is both moody and haunting, enhanced by some reverb in the production.

TREES - "Let It Out" (1979 US Private Psych Folk LP)

This has that extra cool vibe that makes it one in a hundred for obscure school related folk based but with vocals, keyboards, flute, congas, harmonica, guitar ...
they just capture an innocent vibe with titles like "It Feels So Fine To Smile", "Roll Over", "Step Right In", "Loosen Up Your Body", "Watching The Time Go By"...
amateur young girls many solidly breezy moves, sincere and cool.
Private pressing, very obscure and no connection to other bands using the name Trees.

JAY BOLOTIN - "Jay Bolotin" (1970 US original on the small Commonwealth United label)

Given he was only 18 at the time, 1970's cleverly-titled "Jay Bolotin" offered a surprisingly impressive and accomplished set of singer/songwriter material.
Like lots of his folk contemporaries Bolotin had a deep and slightly ragged voice that wasn't immediately attractive, but actually grew on you after awhile.
A couple of reviews have drawn comparison's to Leonard Cohen, though to my ears his voice was actually far better than Cohen's.
Featuring ten Bolotin originals, the album also had a distinctive 'live' feel to it.
Backed by a fantastic pickup band, including Lyon on bass, Fugs drummer Bobby Mason, guitarist David Mowry, and keyboardist Mark Taber about half of the tracks featured electric arrangements. Unfortunately the Commonwealth United label collapsed shortly after the album was released, leaving the album to instant obscurity.
Bolotin continued touring, winning fans within the folk musician community, though little attention elsewhere.
