JEFF BAKER - Loner (1971 German Prog Folk on BASF)

Maybe the most underrated album I know !
Absolute fantastic and intensive Psychedelic, only issued in 1971 on german BASF.
Loner, progressive Folkrock album, partly more rocking, partly more folky, with English vocals, highly recommendable.

There's no secret anymore: some of the finest bands and artists from Cambridge have passed through the Spaceward Studios. Snakehips is one of them. It consists of Dave Goldberg (vocals, guitar, little plastic guitar), Mark Harrison (lead guitar, mandolin, vocals), Doug Arnold (vocals, harmonica, guitar) and Gerry Dudgeon (bass guitar on Lost Property).

ROB PEARSALL & FRIENDS - Abiding in Him (Great 1977 US Private Xian Folk LP)

Rob Pearsall and his fellow Californians deliver a pleasant simply-arranged friendly homemade blend of light, medium and heavy sounds, all more or less within that general category of west-coast melodic rural piano-and-guitar folkrock.
Maybe a bit like Parable in that respect.
The group’s quieter side focuses on piano ballads and solo acoustic songs, while diversions like the country rocking ‘Free In Jesus’ proudly plug in the guitar for a more aggressive edge.
Attractive cover illustration of woodland brook setting seems befitting of the mood.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - "Travelling Folk" (1976 UK Small Private Pressing featuring Merruwyn, Stephanie Clarke and others)

Unusually for one of Eron’s multi-artist showcases, the tracks by the various artists and bands here are not interspersed: each gets a block of ten to twelve minutes, during which they play between two and four songs. However, most of the acts are familiar from earlier Eron ventures. Skinner’s Rats still have a penchant for upbeat morris tunes, and are one of the lesser outfits here. Meanwhile, Tundra (aka the non-Vulcan’s Hammer half of Mingled) offer two lovely, haunting numbers, one traditional and one self-penned, and Mariners have reinvented themselves as a competent electric folk act. Stephanie Clarke (now minus sister Leonie) offers three delightful Spinning Jenny-style songs that are my favourites on the set, whilst Keith Pearson has unfortunately formed a band called Treacle Line that plays horrible countryish jugband stuff. Finally, there’s Merruwyn (better known for their rare album At The Grosvenor), who provide three pleasant cover versions and one excellent original composition ‘Down Among The Evergreen’. (Review by Richard Falk)

Tracklist :

A1 Skinner's Rats - Kentish Nutting Girl
A2 Skinner's Rats - Rambles of Kitty
A3 Skinner's Rats - Horn of the Hunter
A4 Skinner's Rats - Jackie Coleman
A5 Tundra - Bold Fisherman

A7 Mariners - Here's Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy
A8 Mariners - Silver Sphere / Jenny's Chicken

CHARLES BROWNING - "A Choirboy's Lament" (Excellent 1976 US Private Folk Rock LP)

Here is an interesting excavated-from-the-tombs 70's folk record.
Charles Browning appears to be a D.C. area guitar picker/singer/songwriter.
On the back cover photo he looks pretty paranoid n' crazy.
He mainly does originals with only 2 really cool covers (Richard Farina's "Dopico" and Buffy Saint-Marie's "Cod'ine").
The music contained is mellow folk with instrumentation that pushes into the psych realm (nice use of tablas, congas, cymbals, even tubular bells).
Oh yeah, Emmylou Harris is on back-up harmony vocals for a few trax as well.

WAYNE MONBLEAU - "To My Shepherd" (1977 US Private Xian Folk)

Wayne Monbleau is that rare example of a folk-singer who can do magical things within a purely acoustic setting.
He’s similar to Bruce Cockburn in that respect, but there is also an uncanny resemblance to Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, not only in the vocals but also the excellent guitar work and overall progressive acoustic style.
In particular ‘2,000 Years Ago’, ‘John The Baptist’ and ‘The Way, The Truth, And The Life’ all sound like they were cut from the same cloth as some of the more unplugged Tull endeavors (such as Minstrel In The Gallery).
All ten songs are strong, making To My Shepherd one of the most cohesive and remarkable folk recordings in Christian music.

DUMIN & CAVANAGH - "Dark Side of the Moon" (1969 US private gem on the RPC label)

"Mega rare & totally unknown 1969 private press from this gentle, moody, beautiful teen loner folk duo.
About half & half originals and covers, but the whole album has the same sweet vibe.
All the originals are real melancholy beauties, with warm acoustic guitars and their two voices weaving together in unusual ways. nice natural reverb, as it was recorded in an empty classroom after hours!
Always reminds me of the most fragile moments of Kusudo & Worth (and its just as rare)."
Review from ebay seller.

CURTIS BROTHERS - "Memories" (1975 US privately pressed little gem)

Lovely and still mostly unknown private press LP by this California-based duo, with a vibe somewhere between the bittersweet folk-rock sound of late 1960's Donovan, Smokey & His Sister etc. and early 1970's DIY singer-songwriter.
Brother Randy Curtis, who sang lead and wrote all the songs, died of cancer before the album's release and this was privately funded by friends and family in his memory.
The songs have a yearning innocence and undeniable sadness about them, aided by Curtis' gentle, melancholy vocal delivery. There's also an endearing, claustrophobic bed-sitter quality common to a lot of private press albums of the period -- and weirdly enough, a few tracks call to mind the simple ballads and love songs on Roky Erickson's solo records.
Definitely grows on you with each listen, and still off the radar screen for 1970's private press albums.

DOC HOLIDAY - Lady Free (1980 US private press psych little masterpiece)

Another recent discovery !
Justen O'Brien handled engineering and mixing at his own 'Justen Other' studio, reportedly co-wrote several of the (uncredited) songs, and played bass.
With "I Dreamed I Went Sailing Last Night" we are swept into what sounds like a lost outtake from Justen O'Brien's Time Will Tell LP.
Any fan of that highly original piece of work will instantly recognize the odd nocturnal vibe, the flowing basement sound, and the lyrics about journeys of the imagination.
For a pure Justen OB buzz, this is the high point of the LP, but fact is that for its full duration, Lady Free is good or even very good.
There is a certain folk influence that combines with the '70s late-night Midwestern vibe most intriguingly, as heard on side closer "I Am Just A Spirit", which revisited some of the Justen feel as combined with a solid dose of Tom Nehls.
A tribute to Sir Thomas More (!) anglifies the folk theme, while over on side 2 cutting fuzz leads opens the door to the most rocking track, "A Friend I Have".
Moments like this may bring Michael James or even side 2 of Marcus to mind, although Doc's excellent, mellow vocals gives the music a distinct identity.
"Kathleen" takes a Pearls Before Swine approach to a melody reminiscent of Dylan's "Tomorrow Is A Long Time", with excellent use of violin, while the Donovan strain from the Thomas More tune resurfaces on another Albion-themed song about Queen Victoria.
True private press appeal arises from the combination of '60s folk, nocturnal singer-songwriter, and spooky Midwestern late '70s DIY FM rock production; had the Doc been picked up by a record label the outcome would have been completely different.
As it is, the unexpected marriage makes the album difficult to figure out at first, but with several plays a consistent, homogenous experience emerges.
Lady Free has some things in common with the Richard Kneeland LP and may appeal to the same type of '70s private press collector, once the news of Justen O'Brien's presence has been digested.
