Gerry O'Kane - ST (1976 Irish Folk SSW from Canada on Boot)

This record represents Gerry O'Kane's efforts - as a writer and singer - to break away from an Irish pub group he had been leading for some time - Rakish Paddy.

The songs are in the contemporary folk vein, based on his own experiences, including those of an immigrant to Canada, and his impressions of his new home.

The album is not an unqualified success, but it does indicate that O'Kane has style, vocal and instrumental talent, and a promising talent as a songwriter.

Great SSW album in my opinion with a essential Irish feel.

Charlotte Deak Hardage - Sound of the Ram's Horn : From Pyramids of Snow and Ice (1976 US Private Folk LP on Invikta House, Inc.)

All originals by Charlotte Deak Hardage with beautiful ethereal vocals by Lara Mitchell and Don Weems.

Reminds me a little bit of Helene's voice on the Helene & Marc - "The Beginning" LP.

Brian Short - Anything for a Laugh (Excellent 1971 UK SSW LP - Dutch issue on the Bovema label)

Really great album of Brian Short, ex Black Cat Bones' singer.

Short's got a way of making songs that are at once chilled and somewhat gloomy, yet quite epic.

Sometimes the sound is loungy, sometimes it's baroque-folky, and a very cool sax leads the way out on "Blue Tuesday".  Meanwhile it's just straight up guitar 'n' piano classic rock on "Don't You Need Me Anymore".  And it all just somehow reminds of Joe Cocker's version of "A Little Help From My Friends".
It's a great obscure little album !
